Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg: Which German City to Base In

Each city has a completely different personality. Here's which one matches your travel style.

Germany's major cities are remarkably distinct from each other — more so than the major cities of most European countries. Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg each have a strongly individual character, culture, and atmosphere, and the right choice for your trip depends entirely on what you want from it.

Berlin is one of the great cities of the world — historically significant, architecturally fascinating (the juxtaposition of Soviet-era concrete and cutting-edge contemporary buildings is endlessly interesting), culturally vibrant, and cheaper than almost any other major European capital. Munich is wealthy, beautiful, and traditional — Bavarian culture, the English Garden, outstanding museums, and the world's best beer halls. Hamburg has a maritime energy, a legendary music history (The Beatles played their first extended residencies here), and one of Europe's most interesting contemporary restaurant scenes.

This guide helps you choose between the three cities based on your travel priorities — history, nightlife, food, outdoor space, day-trip options, and budget.
