Japan's Hidden Gems Most Tourists Never Reach

Kanazawa, the Nakasendo trail, Yakushima — the Japan beyond the Kyoto-Tokyo corridor.

The classic Japan itinerary — Tokyo, a bullet train to Kyoto, day trips to Nara and Osaka — is excellent and deservedly popular. But Japan rewards travellers who venture beyond the well-worn path with experiences that feel genuinely undiscovered by mass tourism.

Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan coast is often called 'little Kyoto' — geisha districts, samurai neighbourhoods, Kenroku-en (consistently ranked one of Japan's finest gardens), and outstanding fresh seafood from the Japan Sea. Yet it sees a fraction of Kyoto's tourist numbers. The Nakasendo trail through the Japanese Alps, a historic post road between Tokyo and Kyoto, passes through preserved Edo-period post towns like Magome and Tsumago that look almost exactly as they did 200 years ago.

This guide covers eight destinations in Japan that reward the effort of going further — each with a specific reason why they're worth the trip and how to reach them using Japan's extraordinary public transport network.
