Dubai Neighbourhood Guide: Where to Stay Based on Your Plans

Downtown, Dubai Marina, Deira, Palm Jumeirah — the honest guide to choosing your base in Dubai.

Dubai is a sprawling city built along a coast, and where you stay makes an enormous difference to how you experience it. Unlike a European city, there's no single central neighbourhood that puts you close to everything — the city is simply too spread out for that. The right base depends entirely on why you're in Dubai.

Downtown Dubai, centred on the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, is the city's most iconic address — spectacular views, great restaurants, and easy access to major attractions. But it's also the most expensive part of the city, and transport to anywhere else requires a taxi or Metro ride. Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) offer a younger, more beach-focused atmosphere with excellent restaurants along the waterfront.

Old Dubai — Deira and Bur Dubai — offers a completely different experience: the historic Creek, the gold and spice souks, budget hotels, and some of the city's most authentic food. It's less glamorous but more genuinely interesting if you want to understand what Dubai was before the skyscrapers arrived. This guide covers each major neighbourhood with honest takes on who each area suits best.
