UAE Hidden Gems: Beyond Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Hatta, Fujairah, Al Ain — the surprising sides of the UAE most tourists never explore.
Most visitors to the UAE see Dubai's skyline and maybe Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Mosque — and leave without discovering a country that is far more diverse and interesting than its skyscraper image suggests. The seven emirates span desert, mountains, ancient oases, and an Indian Ocean coastline that looks nothing like Dubai Beach.
Hatta, a UAE exclave in the Hajar Mountains about 90 minutes from Dubai, has dramatic rocky canyons, a heritage village, a historic fort, and a dammed lake that has made it a popular outdoor destination for UAE residents seeking an escape from the city. It's almost unknown internationally. Fujairah on the east coast has clear Indian Ocean water, old watchtowers, and a pace of life completely different from Dubai. Al Ain, the UAE's garden city on the Oman border, has ancient aflaj irrigation systems (UNESCO World Heritage), a camel market, and the Al Ain Oasis — an enormous date palm grove in the middle of the city.
This guide covers six genuinely surprising destinations in the UAE that most international visitors never reach — each within day-trip distance of Dubai and each offering a completely different perspective on the country.
